荷兰为什么叫Holland又叫the Netherland有什么区别

因为以前的荷兰省经济非常发达，以至于比国家更加出名，就被人误以为荷兰是国家的名字。

荷兰（国家）的英语正式名称是The Netherlands (荷兰语为Nederland)，是荷兰王国(英语 Kingdom of the Netherlands，荷兰语 het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden)的其中一部分。

而Holland则是位于该国中西部的地区（分为北荷兰省和南荷兰省）。由于荷兰地区曾经是神圣罗马帝国其中一个县，为荷兰伯爵所管治，后于1581年成为尼德兰联省共和国中最强大的一省，后人常以Holland (荷兰）指代整个尼德兰。

荷兰在1648年以前先后受到哈布斯堡王朝、神圣罗马帝国和西班牙的统治，1581年成立尼德兰联省共和国，  1648年西班牙正式承认其独立，并在17世纪时达到鼎盛时期，成为当时世界上最强大的海上霸主，曾被誉为海上马车夫。1815年成立王国，1848年确立君主立宪政体。

荷兰是世界有名的低地国家，本土设12个省，下设443个市镇。首都设在阿姆斯特丹，但是其中央政府、国王居住办公地、所有的政府机关与外国使馆、最高法院和许多组织都在海牙。国土总面积41864平方千米，位于欧洲西偏北部，是著名的亚欧大陆桥的欧洲始发点，与德国、比利时接壤。

荷兰地势非常平坦，仅在东部和南部有几座山丘。荷兰国名Nederland原意为“低地”。荷兰的最高点为海拔321公尺、位于东南方的法尔塞山，此处也是荷兰、德国、比利时三国的交界处。
